Dr. Manisha Kalaver MBBS

Life Expectancy, Underwriting & Insurance Medicine Expertise

Dr. Manisha Kalaver is a physician and insurance medicine professional with more than 20 years of diverse experience across life, health, accident, and disability insurance, spanning underwriting, insurance medicine, claims, product development, client servicing, training, and complex risk assessment.

Her career includes senior roles across both direct insurance and reinsurance, including AIG, Gen Re, and RGA, complemented by several years of hands-on clinical practice. This combination has given her a broad perspective on translating clinical and medical information into sound insurance risk decisions while balancing prudent risk selection, profitability, product objectives, and practical business considerations.

At Nuvica, Dr. Kalaver specializes in life expectancy and complex mortality assessment and provides specialist insurance medicine expertise for complex underwriting and Medical Director referrals.

Senior Underwriting Leadership at AIG

Dr. Kalaver began her insurance career with Tata AIG Life Insurance, where she progressed to Chief Underwriter during an eight-year tenure.

As Chief Underwriter, she was responsible for implementing corporate risk philosophy across life and health products and overseeing complex and high-value risk assessment. Her responsibilities extended beyond individual case decisions to underwriting quality, underwriting and claims processes, regulatory and audit requirements, risk mitigation, underwriting authorities, capacity planning, reinsurance arrangements, and product development.

She chaired Underwriting & Claims Committee meetings and played an active role in establishing underwriting guidelines and requirements for new products.

This experience provided her with a comprehensive understanding of underwriting as both a risk-selection discipline and a business function, requiring the appropriate balance between risk, consistency, profitability, customer expectations, and business objectives.

Reinsurance & Complex Risk Expertise

Dr. Kalaver subsequently expanded her experience into reinsurance and insurance medicine through roles with Gen Re and RGA, adding a broader risk and medical perspective to her direct insurance background.

As Medical Officer with Gen Re, she provided risk assessment across life and health products, including cases from India, Singapore, and Malaysia. Her responsibilities encompassed life, critical illness, disability, accident and health risks, as well as complex case assessment, claims, underwriting and claims audits, portfolio analysis, medical evidence requirements, simplified underwriting, tele-underwriting, and product and pricing support.

She later joined RGA as Associate Director, Medical Services, providing medical consultation for facultative underwriting and supporting product development through assessment of medical evidence, clinical developments, and appropriate underwriting parameters.

Her experience with two global reinsurers provides a valuable perspective on facultative underwriting, complex medical risk, insurance medicine, claims, product development, and the underwriting challenges faced by insurance clients.

Clinical Medicine & Medical Director Expertise

A distinctive aspect of Dr. Kalaver’s professional background is the combination of senior underwriting leadership, reinsurance experience, and hands-on clinical medicine.

She spent several years practicing as a General Physician, providing direct patient care before returning to senior insurance medicine roles.

This clinical experience strengthens her ability to interpret disease presentation, investigations, treatment, progression, and prognosis within the context of insurance risk.

As an insurance medicine professional, she provides specialist assessment for cases requiring expertise beyond routine underwriting, including complex diseases, advanced medical investigations, unusual clinical presentations, and cases involving multiple interacting medical conditions.

Her role is to translate medical complexity into a clear insurance medicine perspective that supports sound underwriting decisions, making this experience particularly relevant to Nuvica’s Medical Director services.

Life Expectancy & Complex Mortality Assessment

At Nuvica, Dr. Kalaver has developed recognized expertise in life expectancy and complex mortality assessment, supporting the North American life settlement market.

Her work involves detailed review of complex medical histories and integration of disease severity and progression, treatment and response, functional status, medical investigations, multiple comorbidities, and relevant prognostic factors to assess their combined impact on mortality and expected longevity.

Life expectancy assessment frequently requires judgment where multiple diseases and competing prognostic factors interact and cannot be adequately evaluated in isolation.

Dr. Kalaver’s background as a physician, former Chief Underwriter, and reinsurance medical professional provides a particularly strong foundation for this work, allowing her to combine clinical interpretation with underwriting judgment and mortality-focused risk assessment.

Life expectancy and complex mortality assessment are now a significant area of her professional expertise and a central component of her role at Nuvica.

Regional Product Development & Critical Illness Expertise

Product development and critical illness represent another significant area of Dr. Kalaver’s expertise.

While her career has primarily been based in India, her work has extended to regional product development and critical illness initiatives involving Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and Middle Eastern markets.

Her work has included medical and underwriting input into product design, underwriting parameters, and critical illness definitions, requiring the translation of evolving clinical medicine, diagnostic criteria, and medical evidence into practical insurance product frameworks.

Dr. Kalaver played a pivotal role in developing a women’s critical illness product covering female-specific critical illnesses, cancers, gynecological conditions, pregnancy complications, and congenital conditions affecting newborns.

She also represented both Gen Re and RGA as a core member of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) initiative to standardize critical illness definitions in India.

This combination of underwriting, medical, and product expertise provides particular depth in the development and interpretation of critical illness products and policy definitions.

Claims Expertise

Claims assessment has been an important component of Dr. Kalaver’s career across both direct insurance and reinsurance environments.

Her experience encompasses life, critical illness, disability, accident, and health claims, including large, disputed, and medically complex cases.

Her work has involved interpretation of medical records, diagnostic evidence, and cause-of-death information, together with mortality and morbidity claims analysis and audits.

Her background across both underwriting and claims provides perspective across the insurance risk lifecycle, from the initial assessment and acceptance of risk to the subsequent evaluation of complex claims.

Product, Underwriting & Business Perspective

Dr. Kalaver’s experience extends beyond technical risk assessment.

Throughout her career, she has worked with underwriting, claims, actuarial, product, and business teams to translate corporate risk philosophy into practical underwriting strategies and product requirements.

Her senior underwriting and reinsurance experience has developed an approach that recognizes the need to maintain strong underwriting standards while appropriately balancing risk, profitability, customer needs, and broader business objectives.

This perspective is particularly valuable when providing Medical Director or underwriting support, where technically sound medical assessment must ultimately translate into a practical insurance decision.

Training, Audits & Client Support

Dr. Kalaver has extensive experience developing underwriting and claims capabilities through training, audits, quality assessment, and client engagement.

She has conducted workshops and training for underwriters and claims professionals, supported complex underwriting and claims discussions, and contributed to insurance education programs across India and Asia.

Her experience also includes underwriting and claims audits, process review, quality assessment, and identification of opportunities to improve underwriting consistency and capability.

Leadership & Team Development

Dr. Kalaver has significant experience building, developing, and mentoring underwriting teams.

As a senior underwriting leader, she has focused on maintaining high underwriting standards while developing technical capability, accountability, sound judgment, and consistency within underwriting teams.

Her experience as a Chief Underwriter, physician, and reinsurance medical professional provides a broad understanding of the technical, operational, and people dimensions required to develop effective underwriting capabilities.

Medical Research & Emerging Risk

Dr. Kalaver maintains an active interest in developments in clinical medicine and their implications for insurance risk.

Her work has included evaluation of emerging areas such as genomics, wearable technologies, AI-enabled diagnostics, evolving disease patterns, critical illness, cancer, and women’s health, with consideration of their implications for underwriting, claims, and product development.

This focus supports the translation of developments in clinical medicine into practical insurance medicine and underwriting perspectives.
