Experience Across the Insurance Risk Lifecycle

Dr. Rahul Nawander is a physician and insurance medicine executive with more than 20 years of international experience across multiple disciplines within life and health insurance and the life settlement industry.

His career has evolved across underwriting operations, process design, facultative and high-net-worth underwriting, client management, underwriting automation, product development, underwriting audits, mortality and morbidity research, evidence-based guideline development, insurance medicine, complex claims, and life expectancy assessment.

This breadth of experience provides Dr. Nawander with a perspective that extends beyond individual risk assessment to how underwriting functions are designed, supported, automated, governed, and continuously developed.

Underwriting, Operations & Process Development

Dr. Nawander began his insurance career working across underwriting operations, process design, and automation. This provided an early understanding of how underwriting philosophy, operational processes, technology, and workflow must work together to create an effective underwriting function.

His career subsequently progressed into facultative and high-net-worth underwriting, including the assessment of complex and impaired risks. His responsibilities expanded into client and relationship management, providing direct experience in understanding the underwriting requirements, challenges, and expectations of insurance organizations.

Global Underwriting & Risk Expertise

During more than 14 years with Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), Dr. Nawander worked across multiple dimensions of the underwriting function and ultimately served as Assistant Vice President, Underwriting Research.

His experience included facultative and complex underwriting, client and relationship management, electronic underwriting rule development, product development support, underwriting audits, and the development of algorithmic tools and calculators for risk assessment and automation.

He subsequently led RGA’s global underwriting research function, with responsibility for developing and maintaining its underwriting manual. His work encompassed mortality and morbidity research, evidence-based underwriting guidelines, predictive modeling, medical risk assessment, and the translation of emerging medical evidence into practical underwriting guidance.

This progression provided experience not only in making underwriting decisions, but also in developing the guidelines, processes, technology, and risk frameworks that support those decisions.

International Market Experience

Dr. Nawander’s career has provided extensive exposure to diverse insurance markets and underwriting environments.

His experience across Asia includes India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan, complemented by project engagements in France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain.

His current work is predominantly focused on North American life and health insurance and the life settlement market.

Experience across Asian, European, and North American markets has provided him with a broad perspective on differences in products, underwriting philosophies, medical evidence, distribution environments, risk practices, and approaches to insurance medicine.

Insurance Medicine & Medical Director Expertise

A significant part of Dr. Nawander’s current work involves providing specialist insurance medicine expertise for cases that require medical assessment beyond routine underwriting.

He provides Medical Director support for complex underwriting referrals, including interpretation and assessment of advanced medical investigations, challenging oncology cases, rare diseases, complex chronic conditions, and cases involving multiple interacting comorbidities.

His work involves translating complex clinical information, investigations, disease characteristics, treatment, prognosis, and emerging medical evidence into an insurance medicine perspective that supports sound underwriting decisions.

He currently serves as Medical Director at Fasano Underwriting, a Longevity Holdings Inc. company, providing expertise across complex medical underwriting, life, disability, and longevity risk.

Life Expectancy & Complex Mortality Assessment

Dr. Nawander has developed particular expertise in mortality and life expectancy assessment, including complex cases within the North American life settlement market.

Life expectancy assessment frequently requires considerably more than identifying individual medical impairments. His approach integrates disease severity and progression, treatment history and response, multiple comorbidities, functional status, advanced medical investigations, and relevant prognostic factors to evaluate their combined impact on mortality and expected longevity.

This work brings together his experience in clinical medicine, mortality research, complex underwriting, and insurance medicine.

Underwriting Manuals & Evidence-Based Guidelines

Underwriting research and guideline development have been a significant component of Dr. Nawander’s career.

After leading global underwriting research and manual development at RGA, he continues to work on underwriting manuals and evidence-based guidelines for insurance organizations across Asia and North America.

His experience extends from reviewing medical and mortality research and understanding the risk implications of an impairment to developing practical underwriting guidance, rating frameworks, decision criteria, and implementation approaches.

He also provides strategic support for underwriting manual development, including impairment prioritization, workflow and platform considerations, underwriter training, and peer review.

Underwriting Technology & Automation

Dr. Nawander has extensive experience translating underwriting knowledge into technology-enabled decision support.

His work has included electronic underwriting rules, automated decision logic, algorithmic risk assessment, and the development of underwriting calculators capable of incorporating multiple risk variables and comorbidities.

He has developed specialized underwriting tools and has worked on approaches that translate complex underwriting and medical risk concepts into structured, repeatable decision frameworks.

This experience provides a practical bridge between underwriting expertise, insurance medicine, and technology.

Complex Claims Advisory

Dr. Nawander also provides specialist guidance on complex life and health insurance claims for North American insurers.

His approach integrates comprehensive medical record review with the original application and underwriting information, policy definitions, disease progression, and other relevant clinical and contractual considerations.

His experience across both underwriting and claims provides perspective across the insurance risk lifecycle, from the initial assessment and acceptance of risk to the subsequent evaluation of complex claims.

Research & Thought Leadership

Dr. Nawander is an active researcher, author, and international industry speaker and has authored more than 20 articles and research papers addressing medical impairments, mortality, life expectancy, and emerging issues affecting insurance underwriting.

His published work includes contributions to On The Risk and Life Select, as well as authorship of the Blood Pressure chapter in Brackenridge’s Medical Selection of Life Risks.
